According to María “Adona is a nonprofit association created in 1957.” She says that this association was created with the purpose of grouping donors and defending their rights. María does what she can, she helps with communication and administration (with her partner Maite). She also works on advertisement and campaigns, and she coordinates the entire volunteer team too: direction and 80 workers. Finally, she prepares the talks and speaks in front of the audience. María is incredible!

Can people under 18 donate?

Although it is physically possible, it is an ethical principle, a civil responsibility. Just like when we’re under 18, we can’t vote, drive, drink... we can’t donate either.

But, as María always says, "We all are going to be 18."

Why did you become donor?

We don’t have to be donors for a tragedy or a "I may need it" it’s an attitude for life. If there weren't blood donations, there wouldn't be other donations or surgeries. Treatments for cancer, medicines derived from human plasma, the treatment of rare diseases... in all these processes blood donation is essential.

What is made with blood after donating?

Right after the donation, the blood is passed to fractionation and to a "washing machine". That's a machine that centrifuges the blood and separates the components. Red blood cells stay down, platelets and some white blood cells stay in the middle and plasma goes up.

Plasma and platelets are easily separated. However, when red blood cells are removed, they have to be filtered in order to remove the white blood cells because they cause many problems when transplanting is performed.

Three types of medicines can be generated in pharmaceutical industries through plasma. First of all, albumin. Second are clotting factors. Last but not least are immunoglobulins. Today, blood consumption has increased due to this type of medication.

“Human plasma can be as important as water and energy.”
