Gema De La Nava

Gema De La Nava was born with kidney problems of birth. She was only 5 years old when through some radiographs the doctor announced that one of his kidneys had disappeared, he had only one left and was failing.
Years passed, but finally she had the donor, his brother would be the one to give Gema a new chance in life!  The 6th of July of 2010 the surgery took place and her new life began.

"I always say that my mother gave me the life, but my brother has given it to me again. Iwas condemned to be tied to a machine, but he has given me an opportunity that I cannot disapprove: my brother has sacrificed in giving me a part of his body and now I have to take care of both".

"I was born with the spina bifida; it means that I was born with the spine opened. As a result, the liquid that I had in my body went all over it and affected me from the feet to the head."

"I have had many operations since I was a child, and that's why I have had many problems which I have got over for trying to have a normal life. It's hard to be ill because you think you are a stranger and that affects you and you lose a lot of things: school time, time to play with friends, you sometimes can’t do things that they do... Nevertheless, I have always met my friends, and I also went partying too! I have always tried to have a normal life until the transplant arrived and I could do many more things than the ones I did before".

There have been times when I went out (I usually go to have dinner with my friends) and many times my husband told me: “you are here or you are not?” Because in the dialysis you get lowerings of tension and then sometimes you cannot even move...

When I was there with my friends many times it was like I was not there, but I still made an effort to be, for trying to lead a life as normal as possible. Because if you stay at home every time and only go from home to dialysis and from dialysis to home in the end you don’t have no life, and it is a way to be free and have a life.
