Which are the most donated organs? And the least ones? Why?

The most donated organs in Ireland are kidneys, because they can be from a live donor. The least donated one is the pancreas, I presume its difficult to procure a sufficiently healthy one for transplant.

What is your opinion about financial donation, that is, what do you think about the financial compensation that can be obtained by donating organs?

Not in favour – open to abuse. However I am for the donor being rewarded with paid leave, childcare support etc for the recovery duration.

What can be improved regarding organ and tissue donation?

We are awaiting the introduction of legislation in the Irish Parliament this month that if passed will consider every citizen an organ unless specifically declared otherwise by the citizen – (Soft Opt Out)

What do you think about the Spanish healthcare-system?

I am aware of that fact and Ireland is number 4 per capita in Europe. I knew that Spain is the country with more donors per capita but know little else about the Spanish Healthcare system.

We did a final interview to Gerry Scully via gmail. Gerry Scully is a volunteer worker in the association “Organ Donation Transplant Ireland” (Ireland's Health Services).

He is secretary of the Irish Heart & Lung Transplant Ass, a patient support group for transplanted heart and lung recipients. He is the main administrator for this organisation. So he does everything she can that concerns running and managing an office etc. He is an unpaid volunteer!

A single donor can save up to eight lives | Duval Guillaume

What can we do to promote donation? How can we become donors? How many lives can we improve?

The potential for improved life expectancy and quality is immeasurable. The more organ donors the more lives can be saved simple as that. I’d suggest visit’s to school’s by clinical transplant medic’s and nurse’s accompanied by young transplant recipients who can briefly tell their life story pre and post- transplant.
